A young person supported by YMCA Birmingham has this year been appointed to the board of trustees. Gabriel Imevbore, 22, came to YMCA Birmingham after a family relationship breakdown meant he was homeless and was placed in emergency accommodation. YMCA Birmingham gave Gabriel the home he needed.
With amazing support from YMCA staff coupled with a positive attitude, Gabriel has turned his life around. Determined not to let his past challenges define him, Gabriel threw himself into life at the YMCA. He became resident representative; helping and supporting other residents to settle in and with a wide range of issues. A natural leader, Gabriel saw that he could make positive change within YMCA to make resident’s experiences even better. This positive attitude led to a nomination for YMCA’s Youth Matters Awards, Young Leader of The Year in 2017. Gabriel was successful and subsequently won the Award.
Recently Gabriel has become the youngest member of the board of trustees in YMCA Birmingham’s history and he has future ambitions of becoming a successful entrepreneur.
Gabriel says, “I am really grateful for the support I have received from everyone at YMCA and the opportunities I have been given.
“I now want to use my experiences and success to change the narrative around homelessness and adversity and to inspire others to overcome whatever difficulties they are facing.”
Hyacinth Blackburn, Housing Services Director said: “We are so proud of what Gabriel has achieved and that he has been given the opportunity to join our board of trustees. He is already making his mark and contributing positively to our charity.”
